Water Damage And The Signs Of Water Damage

Water Damage

There are several signs that there are water problems in your home. Water leaks can happen anywhere in the house, and they frequently appear in the kitchen, bathroom and laundry rooms. Early detection could mean a simple job such as mopping up the water. However, if ignored major plumbing and or structural problems can occure as well as the spread of toxic mold and mildew.

Leaks

It will be worthwhile to periodically check your bathrooms, kitchen and laundry rooms to detect any water odors, spots, or leaks. If you see a faucet dripping, try to locate the source of the leak. It could be a simple washer that needs to be replaced, or a whole new faucet mechanism.

Dishwasher

The kitchen dishwasher is a common place for a leak. Periodically check under the sink for loose hose connections, discolored, warped, or soft flooring, which would indicate water leaks from the dishwasher.

Ice Machine

Another place for a water leak would be at the ice machine. Be sure the connector is securely attached to the water supply line. A wet spot on the floor may be as simple as melted ice cubes. The line could also be crimped, causing the line to burst.

Bathroom

In the bathroom you would detect a water leak by discoloration or soft areas around the floors, walls, or bathtubs. Check caulking at the joints, especially where the walls meet the floor. To repair or prevent more problems, simply caulk the areas again. Be sure the areas are clean before doing this procedure.

Toilet

One of the major problem areas for water leaks is in the toilet. Placing inappropriate objects in the toilet could clog them up, especially low-flow toilets that are now required in homes. These objects can create an obstruction that can corrode the internal components, eventually leading to a leak.

Washing Machine

Washing machines are another problem that we face if hoses are not regularly checked for wetness around the hose ends or signs of bulging, cracks or fraying. Replace hoses every three to five years as part of preventive maintenance.
