It’s a sure thing that every homeowner will have to deal
with some kind of water damage at some point.
It may be small, such as an overflowing sink or leaking pipe, or it may
be large, such as a backed up sewage system or torrential rains resulting in a flash
flood. Whether the spill is large or
small, it should be dealt with promptly.
If you fail to do so, additional problems such as mold are a virtual
certainty.
The first thing you should do in the event of water damage
is to locate the source of the water and shut it off. This not only prevents more water from coming
in and causing more damage, but it provides you with an indication of the type
of water you may be dealing with, and what
kind of contaminants may be present.
You should also make sure and shut off all utilities to your
home. Do this even if the power has been
knocked out. The electricity will kick
back on at some point, and you don’t want to be standing in six inches of water
when it does. You should always wear
protective clothing when working in and around flood waters. Waterproof boots, heavy duty gloves, and
protective eyewear are must haves. If
mold is present, wear a filtration mask or better yet, a respirator. This will prevent inhalation of dangerous
mold spores.
Water will have to be removed from the home, and everything
dried out thoroughly. Make sure all
surfaces are completely dry before allowing any further repairs to be
done. Water extraction is accomplished
through the use of wet-dry vacs or submersible pumps. Secondary drying is done through the use of
high velocity fans, blowers, and dehumidifiers.
