It’s a pretty sure bet that most every homeowner will have
to endure some form of water damage at some point. It may be small,
such as and overflowed sink
or leaky pipe, or it may be large, such as a backed up sewer or storm produced
flash flood. Whether the spill is big or
small, it should be dealt with promptly.
If you do not, additional problems such as mold are a virtual certainty.
The first thing you should do in the event of water damage
is to locate the source of the water and shut it off. This not only prevents more water from coming
in, but it provides you with an indication of the type of water you may be
dealing with, what kind of contaminants may be present, etc.
You should also shut off all utilities to your home. Do this even if the power has been knocked
out. The electricity will come back on
at some point, and you don’t want to be standing in six inches of water when it
does. You should also wear protective
clothing when working in and around flood waters. Waterproof boots, rubber gloves, and
protective eyewear are musts. If mold is
present, wear a filtration mask or better yet, a respirator. This will prevent inhalation of dangerous
mold spores.
Water will need to be removed from the home, and everything
dried out thoroughly. Make sure all
surfaces are completely dry before allowing any further repairs to be
done. Water extraction is typically
accomplished through the use of wet-dry vacs or submersible pumps. Secondary drying is done through the use of
high velocity fans, blowers, and dehumidifiers.
