Returning home after a flood can be one of the most
traumatizing feelings of violation and hopelessness you can ever
experience. Seeing your home, your
possessions, so much of your very life swept away can leave you wondering if
things will ever be normal again.
Well, they can, but you have to do it right. Keep your head and put your emotions to the
side for a while to deal with the problems caused by flooding. And they are numerous.
Rule number one is safety.
Do not enter a flood damaged home until you have verified that the
structure is stable and in no danger of collapse. Have the electricity and gas shut off at the
source. Under no circumstance should you
work with any electricity while standing in flood waters.
Flood waters may also contain sewage; so if possible, verify
the source of the water. Take
appropriate measures such as wearing protective clothing (waterproof boots,
heavy duty gloves, and eyewear).
The house should be dried out as quickly as possible. It only takes about 48 hours for long term damage
to be done, primarily in the form of mold propagation. Mold established quickly, spreads rapidly,
causes a number of health related issues, and can be very difficult to
remediate.
The most basic method for drying out a house is air
circulation. Open as many windows and
doors and use high velocity fans to get air moving and facilitate drying. Dehumidifiers are used to pull imbedded
moisture from flooring or walls.
