A flood is any homeowner’s nightmare, even more so than a
flood, and with good reason. Floods are
fully capable of being even more destructive than a fire, and the processes for
flood damage cleanup are precise and should be undertaken as quickly as
possible to avoid further complications.
If you are the victim of a flood disaster, here are some
initial safety tips and guidelines to stabilize your home until help arrives.
Do not re-enter your home until you have established that it
is safe. Flood waters can actually move
a home on its foundation, making it prone to collapse. Likewise, shut off all electricity and
gas. I actually saw a Youtube video
recently showing a guy checking his electrical switches while standing ankle
deep in water…..a sure candidate for the Darwin award.
When you are able to re-enter, document everything, either
with photos or video of your property and the damage. This will prove invaluable for insurance
purposes. Remember, flood damage is not automatically
covered by homeowners insurance.
Remove all loose items, electrical appliances, and furniture
from the home. These can be dried out
and cleaned elsewhere, and appliances will need to be checked out by a
qualified electrician before being used again.
Your home will need to be dried out, cleaned, disinfected
and sanitized. All excess moisture should
be removed from surfaces and the surrounding air. This is important to prevent the onset and
growth of molds or mildews.
If you have been the victim of a major flood event, contact your local water damage restoration company. They can handle all aspects of your water restoration project, and have you back in your home quickly and efficiently.
