The term “flood disaster” is pretty repetitive, since any
flood is usually a disaster. Swift and
destructive, they have the ability to wipe out lives and property within a very
short time. Even minor floods have the
ability to cost thousands of dollars in property damage.
If you find yourself the victim of a flood event, the
important thing to do is to keep your head.
Make wise decisions, and make them in the correct order. Flood disaster recovery should include the
following:
Seek medical care immediately if necessary. Flood waters become contaminated very
quickly, and can yield a higher possibility of infection.
Stay out of the way of medical or rescue crews. You may want to help, but will instead just
be in the way.
Do not return home until local authorities have announced
that it is safe to do so. Just because
the water levels drop does not mean the danger is over.
Stay out of any building that is still covered in
floodwater. Foundations may be weakened
and the risk for collapse is great.
When you are able to enter your home or if you have to enter
another building, wear protective clothing, waterproof boots, long sleeves and
pants, as well as protective eyewear.
Throw out any food that has been in contact with flood
waters. Contamination is highly likely.
Pump out flooded basements gradually…..going too fast may
actually result in damage to the foundational structure due to rapidly changing
pressure.
