A wet basement can be a big headache, but basement flooding in your finished basement can make you just want to call in an airstrike and start all over
again. Basements are the prime target
for any sort of water damage, due in large part to their low lying locations
and the fact that water loves to flow downhill and settle in the lowest spot.
Because basements are many times used for storage, water
damage in the basement generally means that valuable items will be damaged or
destroyed. In addition, your foundation
may suffer damage through premature wood rot, and the stage can also be set for
the onset of mold, which can establish in as little as 48 hours, spread
rapidly, and cause all kinds of health problems.
It then becomes important to deal with your basement flooding problem as soon as possible. Time is of the
essence in any sort of water damage, but even more so when it comes to your
basement.
You’ll need to pump out the excess water, taking care not to
remove too much too fast. Doing so may
cause sudden pressure changes that can weaken the foundation walls, making them
prone to collapse. Pump the water out at
the rate of about a foot a day and you should be okay.
Once the excess is out, circulate as much air as possible,
opening all windows and doors, and bringing in fans, blowers, and dehumidifiers….anything
that will move air will help complete the drying cycle.
