A flood is probably the single biggest pain in the backside
that any homeowner can face. Unexpected
and surprisingly destructive, floods leave behind a level of destruction
unequaled even by fire. If you find
yourself the victim of a flood, there are a few steps you can take to help save
your home and possessions.
The first word of the day is safety. You should make sure your home is safe to
enter. Floods can literally warp
foundations or shift homes on their foundations, making them prone to
collapse. Check to see that it is
structurally sound before entering.
Shut off all utilities to the home at their source. And wear protective clothing, long pants,
long sleeves, waterproof boots, and heavy duty gloves. And don’t forget to wash thoroughly after
working in flood waters. There may be
contaminants.
Take plenty of pictures, or better yet, video of the damage. This will be a great asset when the time
comes to work with your insurance company.
Homes should be dried out and cleaned as soon as possible to
avoid further damage, such as mold or mildew taking root. Pump out any excess water, then open all
doors and windows and crank up as many fans, blowers, and dehumidifiers as you
can lay your hands on to complete the drying process. This may take a couple of days.
Then the actual repair process begins, and it may be the
single longest part of the process, involving any damaged furniture or
appliances, as well as personal items, and damage to the structure itself.
