The difference between mold and mildew? Mold is a fuzzy or furry growth growing on
moist, organic matter and composed of
several types of fungi. Mold that grows on fabric is referred to as
mildew. Mold and mildew reproduce by
spores, which float through the air looking for moist surfaces to attach
to. They are usually harmless, but in
moist, enclosed places, where the number of spores is high, they can present a
number of health problems if inhaled by humans or animals.

Mold inhalation can produce allergy type effects. Mold and
mildew symptoms include problems such as sneezing, coughing, nasal problems,
irritation of eyes and throat, and in more severe cases, neurological disorders
and respiratory problems.
There is no way to eliminate all mold or the spores they
produce. They are a natural part of the
environment and as such play a vital role in the breakdown of dead organic
matter. However, when humans are exposed
to high levels of mold, then you have problems.
Testing for mold is usually not required, its presence is
immediately visible and identifiable, and mold creates a distinctive noxious
smell. In short, if you suspect you have
mold, then you probably do.
Mold clean up should begin as soon as mold is
discovered. Mold and mildew cleaner is
readily available in most supermarkets and is effective at killing mold and
mildew.
