If you are a homeowner with a basement, congratulations, you
have in all likelihood joined the 98% of homeowners who will have to deal with
some form of basement flooding at some point in their tenure.
Basements are natural targets for flood water. They are the lowest lying point in any home
or business, and water loves to run downhill.
Put enough water into the equation and bam, you’ve got a problem.
Basement waterproofing is not exactly foolproof, and my
guess is whoever gets it that way will become very wealthy very fast. So knowing that water in your basement is
unavoidable, the best thing to do is be pro-active in minimizing its effects. Check your basement regularly for problems,
including leaky pipes, broken window seals, cracks in the walls, inadequate
drainage, malfunctioning sump pits, and even clogged gutters or improper
landscape slope.
Taking care of and repairing these issues as they are
discovered will go a long way towards preventing serious water damage in your
basement. Remember that even the
smallest of leaks can become a lake if left unattended long enough. Even the Grand Canyon was a tiny ditch when it
started out.
You can also elevate certain “at risk” items. Take valuables to a higher floor. Elevate appliances, power outlets, and
electrical boxed to a level 12 inches above a projected waterline. All work of this sort should be done by a
qualified electrician.
If you do end up with a waterlogged basement, it’s
okay. Just pump out the excess water and
then dry everything out using fans, blowers, and dehumidifiers. Make sure everything is completely dry before
assuming repairs are complete.
