If you find yourself in a home flood zone, don’t worry
(okay, don’t worry MUCH). Your home can
be saved, and you can have your life back.
Just make sure and do everything thoroughly the first time..jpg)
This can never be stressed enough, check your homeowners’
policy and make sure you have adequate home flood insurance. Flood insurance is not an automatic part of
your coverage; you may have to request it.
Do so. Floods can happen
anywhere; don’t be caught unawares.
Pumping the water out of the home, known as water
extraction, is done by using gas powered submersible pumps and wet-dry vacuum
units to suck the excess water up and remove it. Water should be drained as far away from your
home as possible. A sink or curbside
drainage vent is ideal.
Once the water has been removed, carpets and other surfaces
will all still be wet to the touch, having retained some water. Secondary drying should be done by opening
all doors and windows, and using high velocity fans and dehumidifiers to remove
as much residual moisture from the air as possible.
Carpets will need to be taken up and the flooring underneath
dried out and cleaned. Do not attempt to
re-install any carpet or rugs until all surfaces are dry. Failure to follow this advice will result in
the growth of mold, which releases toxins into the air that may be harmful if
inhaled.
If you do find mold, call a professional. Mold remediation is a difficult process, and
not for the novice.
