Your Flooded Basement In Dallas GA

A flooded basement can give you a major thumper of a headache if you don’t know how to proceed.  And with 98% of basements almost certain to experience it at some point, every homeowner should know how to proceed in the event that it is their basement that gets flooded.385_flood03.jpg

A few tips on dealing with a flooded basement:

Before entering, be sure to shut off all electricity and gas to the basement.  Do this even if the power is out.  It will come back on eventually, and you want to be able to control when it does.

Be sure to check and verify that the structure is secure.  Flood waters can compromise the integrity of structures, making them prone to collapse.  Open windows and doors and let some air begin circulating through your basement.

For insurance purposes, be sure to take plenty of pictures or video to document the damage.  This will prove invaluable later on.  Also, keep a record of all expenses associated with basement flood cleanup.

Use either a wet-dry vac or a gas powered pump to remove excess water.  No electric pumps should be used, for obvious reasons. drying-out-home-sm.jpg

Pump the water out slowly.  Too much too fast can result in sudden pressure changes that may cause walls to collapse.  Remove the water at the rate of about 1/3 each day.

Always wear protective clothing, such as long pants, sleeves, waterproof boots, rubber gloves, and eyewear.  If you are dealing with mold, use a filtration mask or respirator to prevent inhalation of mold spores.
