98% of all basements will suffer some form of water damage, so if you’re a homeowner and have a basement, congratulations, you now know what you have to look forward to.  Since basement flooding is pretty much inevitable, your best course of action would be basement flood prevention, or at the very least, minimization.

This is done by being very proactive in the inspection of your basement for possible problems, such as leaky pipes or broken window seals.  Remember that even the smallest leak can become a lake if given enough time.  It’s best to catch these problems before they have a chance to take hold and grow.

You should also check and make sure your gutters and downspouts are clear and unclogged.  Obstructions could easily send water flowing in the wrong direction. Same goes for landscape slope, which needs to slant away from your home.  Basically look for anything that may serve as an access point for water.

If the worst happens and you do find yourself with a flooded basement, basement flooding cleanup is much like any other.  Remove the excess water and dry everything out, and do so as soon as possible.

Take care when pumping water out, though, especially if you are dealing with several feet of depth….pumping out too fast can result in sudden pressure changes that could cause the walls to collapse.  Pump out the water at the rate of about a foot per day.
