A flood damaged carpet is a whole new brand of headache, and
one that can be very difficult to correct.
The preferable solution would be to just throw out the damaged carpet
and padding and replace it with new.
However, knowing that some people own
carpet that may have sentimental
value as an heirloom or other, valid attachment, the good news is that it is
possible to save your carpet, as long as it has not been wet for longer than 48
hours, and that the flood water in question is not sewage based.
First order of business is to locate the source of the water and shut it off. This will not only prevent additional water from coming in on your carpet, but will also help you identify the source of the water and determine if it is contaminated or not. Again, if the water is sewage based, your best bet is to throw the carpet and the padding out and start all over.
Remove the excess water from the carpet using a shop-vac. Remove as much water as possible this way. That will make the carpet easier to lift.

Take the carpet up and move it outside to a flat area such
as a driveway or patio to complete drying.
Make sure the carpet lays flat to dry so it does not lose its
shape. Throw out the carpet padding and replace
it…it cannot be repaired.
Don’t forget or neglect the flooring beneath. It will need to be dried out and disinfected
as well. Remember, the keyword here is “dry”…..make
sure all surfaces are completely dry before attempting any further repair work.
