Ever since I owned my first home and was the victim of a
carpet ravaging spill (from a clothes washer that had simply had enough), I’ve
become a big fan of hardwood floors.
Trying to clean up and repair a flood damage carpet is kind of like
trying to put
toothpaste back in the tube.
If you’re faced with a flood damaged carpet, and for some
reason you just have to have it restored properly, the news is good. It can be done successfully if a) the carpet
has been wet for less than 48 hours, and b) the carpet isn’t wet as the result
of sewage or other similar contaminates.
However, time is of the essence, and it is important that you move
quickly.
First of all, locate the source of the water and shut it
off. This will not only prevent further
damage but also let you know exactly what kind of water you are dealing
with. You should also shut off all
electricity to the damaged area. Better
yet, play it safe and shut off the electricity to the whole home while
performing repairs. It’s just safer that
way.
Remove the excess water using shop-vacs or pumps, then use
fans and blowers and dehumidifiers to finish removing moisture from the
surfaces. A digital moisture meter will
tell you when humidity levels are back to normal.
The operative word in this whole operation is “dry”; all
surfaces must be completely dried out before any further repair work can be
performed.
