Emergency water removal is something of a repetitive phrase,
since I’ve never seen a water damage problem that didn’t qualify as an
emergency. Even when one of our children
overturns a glass, we scramble to clean it up like there’s no tomorrow, all in
the
name of avoiding an unsightly stain or unwelcome odor.
Water damage to any degree should be dealt with promptly, to
prevent it from becoming a bigger problem or setting the stage for future problems. The basic goal is to remove the water from
the home and dry everything out. The
operative word is “dry”. If everything
is not dry, then your troubles are not over.
In fact, they may be just beginning.
First off, locate the source of the water and shut it
off. Finding the source will also help
you determine exactly what kind of water you are dealing with, and if there are
any contaminants involved. You should
also shut off all utilities to the property.
Do this even if the power is out.
It’s the safest way to proceed.
Use shop-vacs or submersible pumps (gas powered) to remove
excess water from the area. Remove as
much of the water as you can using this method. When you are done, you will find that
surfaces are still wet to the touch.
Open al windows and doors and get as much air circulating as possible to
complete drying. Use high velocity fans
to help the process along. A digital
moisture meter can help determine when humidity and moisture levels are back
within acceptable parameters.
