Okay, you have been the victim of fire damage, and it’s time
to choose who is going to take care of your fire damage clean up. The Yellow Pages are replete with companies
advertising fire damage restoration, but how do you know who to pick?
Most of these companies are very small and sub contract most
of their work, meaning that In all likelihood, the guy who shows up to do the
work has not been trained in any meaningful way to perform fire damage
restoration work, much less be entrusted with any of your most cherished
possessions.
Fortunately, there is a guide out there to help you make the
right decision. The Institute for
Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification (IICRC) was founded 30
years ago as the governing body for the fire and water damage restoration
industry, establishing standards, guidelines and procedure for those companies
wishing to do the work, and providing a measure of accountability and
credibility for those businesses.
The IICRC offers two day training classes in smoke damage
and three day classes in restoring water damage. Of course this does not guarantee that every
business is competent, but it does demonstrate that they are willing to invest
time and money into obtaining credible certification.
These companies will be available 24/7, be licensed, bonded,
and insured, and offer a complete range of services designed to restore your
home to its former beauty. They can also
work alongside your homeowners insurance agent or claims adjuster to make sure
everything is completed and covered in a timely manner.
