Basement water problems are going to be an issue for 98% of
homeowners. It’s almost a
certainty. With foolproof basement
waterproofing still only a concept, the question becomes not how you stop it,
but how you minimize it.
Any basement water leak or seepage can turn into a bigger
problem. The idea is to catch them
before they do. Be proactive in
inspecting your basement regularly for problems such as leaky pipes, broken
window seals, clogged drains, etc. Even
tiny cracks in the foundational walls can allow groundwater access to your
basement.
Don’t forget the exterior.
Clogged drains can back water up into your basement. A flooded basement may also be the result of
clogged gutters or downspouts, which then channel water in all the wrong
directions.
The same goes for landscaping around your home, which should
ideally slope away from your house, taking any excess water with it. Landscape work may alter this slope, sending
water towards your house instead.
Sump pumps or sump pits are excellent deterrents, catching
excess water and filtering it out before it has a chance to back up and become
a major issue. See accompanying diagram
for a basic sump pit setup.
If you do find yourself with a flooded basement, treat it as
you would any water damage scenario.
Open windows and doors to get air circulating. Use wet-dry vacs or gas powered pumps to
remove the water. In cases of major
flooding, don’t pump the water out too fast.
Sudden changes in pressure could actually weaken foundational walls,
causing collapse.
