Studies show that 98% of all basements will suffer some form
of water or flood damage at some point in their existence. Which basically means that all basements will
pretty much be under the gun sooner or later.
While basement waterproofing is a good idea in theory, it remains
relatively impractical, as it is not yet foolproof.
Basements are natural targets for water. They are low lying, and water loves to run
downhill. The inevitable conclusion is that water is going to get into your
basement. So if you cannot stop it, then
you do your best to minimize it. Be
proactive and inspect your basement regularly for any signs of water leakage…leaky
pipes, broken window seals, cracked walls, inadequate drainage, malfunctioning
sump pumps, etc. Even the smallest leak
can become a great lake if ignored for too long. Take care of these problems as they crop up
and you should be able to at least minimize water’s effect on your home and
possessions.
You can also try elevation….raising items that may be prone
to water damage to a higher position.
Appliances can be elevated ten inches or so off the ground, and power
outlets and electrical boxes can likewise be relocated. Be sure to have a qualified electrician take
care of the electrical work and approve it before it is activated.
In the event of water damage, handle it much the same way
you would for any other room in your home.
Remove the excess using a pump or wet-dry vac, then use fans, blowers,
and dehumidifiers to remove the residual moisture still found in various
surfaces. A digital moisture meter can
be used to determine when humidity levels are back within safe parameters.
